Reports this week claim that new Zelda games could be announced soon for the Nintendo Switch.
These wouldn’t be direct sequels to Zelda Breath of the Wild but would no doubt prove very popular with fans.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, first released for the Game Cube, is reportedly getting another HD upgrade.
Having already seen such a project released on the Wii U, it makes sense that Nintendo would be open to trying it again for the Switch.
Zelda games sell well, and we already know that a full-blown remake is in the works for Link’s Awakening.
However, it’s unclear if this new Wind Waker project would be as ambitious. The good news is that since WW has already been given the HD treatment on the Wii U, porting it over would not be such a hassle.
Nintendo has a good track record for doing this with Wii U games, including titles like Mario Kart 8 and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
However, it should also be noted that this rumour has been shared online and should, therefore, be taken with a big pinch of salt.
There has been no mention on when such a project would be released on the Nintendo eShop, or if there would be new features included.
It did specify that Twilight Princess HD would also be launched on the eShop, alongside Wind Waker.
“I don’t know what the Best Buy ‘Link To The Past’ listing is but according to a few sources, Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD are both coming to the Switch eShop,” the Stealth Twitter account posted this week.
“Might be related to the Best Buy listing, might not. This is just a rumour so grains of salt and all that.
“The primary source for this is someone who told me about over 15 games WAY earlier than when they were announced so I was confident enough to post it but it really is a rumour until official.”
The reviews for Wind Waker HD on Wii U were largely positive, with the Nintendo port scoring a user score of 8.9 on Metacritic.
But until Nintendo makes an official announcement, this latest Switch news needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
And it’s not the only one doing the rounds this week, with other reports suggesting that a new Nintendo Switch console could be released this year.
A ‘Lite’ version of the popular handheld is expected to hit the market in 2019, which would cost less and probably include fewer features.
This was expected to arrive with another console, something that has been dubbed the Nintendo Switch Pro.
However, since this rumour first appeared, others have followed that suggest Nintendo won’t be ready to launch it this year.
“Beyond the smaller, budget-focused model lies the development of the overhauled next-generation model intended to replace the one currently available,” a translated report from Nikkei (via NintendoLife) explains.
“Nintendo is believed to be experimenting on a number of different things for the device, including usability, improved image rendering, and changes to the operating system, among other things.
“One development source contends, however, that it still remains unclear at this stage who at the company will end up taking the lead on conceptual development for the new console.”
This latest report makes it sound like this new Pro console will not be ready in 2019 and could be more of a successor device to the current Switch handheld.
Hopefully, we will hear more on these various reports in the weeks and months to come, with Nintendo expected to put on an entertaining E3 show in 2019.
