Tensions have erupted in government over the security risks posed by Huawei as three cabinet ministers are understood to be wrangling over formulating a joint statement on the issue.

The Commons science and technology committee wrote to Jeremy Wright, the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary, and Gavin Williamson, the defence secretary, about the security of the UK’s critical communications infrastructure more than a month ago.

Reassurance was sought from the trio about Huawei, the Chinese telecoms giant, and the extent to which Chinese legislation could compel Chinese companies active in the UK to assist with Chinese national intelligence work.
